Sydney Lunar Festival

GRAPHIC DESIGN

The City of Sydney released a brief to produce the hero artwork for the 2020 Sydney Lunar Festival. The objectives for the art direction were to be inclusive of the communities that celebrate the Lunar New Year and to uniquely portray the contemporary nature of the Festival as something that can only be seen in Sydney.

*Concept art

In Chinese culture, rats represent a new beginning. Inspired by the colourful array of celebrations that occur during the festival, the moon hangs low casting a shadow on the year past, bringing light as the rat looks ahead towards the new day.

Being quick and clever creatures, our rat is seen one moment and disappears the next, subtly redefining the year 2020.
